There was a time when the best barbecue in Texas meant a trek to venerated smoked meat meccas like Austin or Lockhart. But these days, any Southern city worth its salt has a smokin’ hot bbq restaurant nearby. That’s especially true of Houston, where a new generation of pitmasters has brought the bayou city to an even higher plateau of smoky glory.
Time-honored traditions are here to stay, but the latest crop of pit masters have also added an infusion of ambition and creativity. Whether that comes in the form of innovative sides, new recipes or a multicultural flair that honors this town’s melting pot heritage, it has made for one of the most exciting barbecue scenes in the nation.
The city’s top-rated barbecue restaurants showcase a wide variety of styles. Some of the most celebrated are Pinkerton’s Barbeque, which is known for its glazed pork ribs and boudin, as well as chef Kathy’s excellent sides like Smoked Queso and Poblano Mac and Cheese. Other standouts include Fainmous, which aims to capture the hickory smoke of Knoxville in its pulled pork and brisket.
Located inside a Bellaire strip mall, Blood Bros BBQ celebrates Houston’s melting pot culture with cuisines from Asia and Africa. Its menu is constantly rotating, but past options have included guava-glazed pork ribs and Gochujaru fried onion rings with a kimchi dipping sauce. It’s a restaurant that has garnered accolades from the New York Times and Food & Wine, and it was recently named one of Texas Monthly’s Top 50 BBQ Joints.
