A Recall of Barbeque Lays Chips

The crisp, seasoned crunch of a bag of barbeque lays chips can bring a smile to any snacking occasion. They can be a party centerpiece, a pregame munch or even a solo snacking ritual. But there’s a lot more to these snacks than just the familiar potato and corn varieties. They can also be flavored with a range of seasonings, from the sweet and salty to the bold and spicy. And they’re all made with some type of smoke, whether it’s hickory or mesquite or something else altogether.

While it’s not clear how many bags of the recalled Lay’s barbeque chips were actually sold, Frito-Lay says people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk run the risk of having an allergic reaction if they consume them. The affected bags were distributed in various sizes, including 1 oz, 2 5/8 oz and 7 3/4 oz bags. They may have been purchased in stores or distributed through food service distribution, such as a sack lunch at work, the company said in a news release.

A variety of different flavors are available for the classic barbecue-flavored Lay’s chip, with some containing ingredients that make them vegan-friendly. The original Lay’s BBQ chips, for example, contain potatoes, vegetable oils, barbeque seasoning, paprika and other spices, and molasses. But some of the other flavors, such as sourdough, contain dairy products and are not suitable for vegans. The most reliable barbecue-flavored Lay’s chips are the ones that use expeller-pressed plant oils and other non-dairy alternatives, such as organic maltodextrin, torula yeast and paprika.
